Impressions – Sunset over water

This small painting was inspired from a gorgeous sunset I witnessed earlier this summer when I was at the beach with a friend.  There was this  mammoth cloud that rose up into the sky beaming with beautiful colors of orange, red, yellows and shades of purple – it was stunning.

By Your Side

This small painting was inspired from music and a series of photos I took last summer of fishing boats that were docked at one of the Marinas in Rehoboth Bay, Delaware.   I was compelled to name this  piece after the song by Sade, called, BY YOUR SIDE.   I was listening to her music as I was thinking of a title….

Sunset At The Bay Oil painting

SUNSET AT THE BAY – 6X6 – Oil on Board.

This is a view of the Marshlands from the Rehoboth Bay area.  I found the many shades of Mauve/Alizarin Crimson spectacular during this particular Sunset and was compelled to paint it!

Oil Painting of Wooden Boat

I really enjoy creating these small paintings of fisherman boats.  There is something very calming and peaceful about an empty wooden boat anchored in the water.

Two Dog Portraits in Oil

KATIE (Yellow Lab) & MAGGIE (Chocolate Lab)

Sue and Pam are proud owners of Little Miss Katie and Sweet Maggie May.  I painted these two portraits of their beloved labs (Sisters) who passed away a few years ago.  I really enjoyed painting both dogs, especially their faces.  I found their eyes to be so expressive — like tiny windows into their personalities and spirits. See the full portrait of Maggie May (titled Best Friend) and Little Miss Katie or view the full Dog Art Gallery at 5 Element Studios.

Please contact me if you are interested in a custom dog portrait.  Thanks for looking!

Blue Illusions – Dragonfly

BLUE ILLUSIONS – Dragonfly – mixed media on paper – 8 x 10.

Lately, I have been inspired to explore creative new ways to design the dragonfly.  In this piece, the meaning of Dragonfly is highlighted through the use of words, colors, transparencies and light.  This mixed media art was created using ink, acrylics and charcoal on paper.

The notes within the drawing are written partially in mirror image similar to how da Vinci included notes in his art. It reads…

”Life is never quite the way it appears, but is always filled with light and color. Dragonfly can help you see through your illusions and thus allow your own light to shine forth. Dragonfly brings out brightness of transformation and the wonder of colorful new vision.”

Dragonfly with Golden Wings

Dragonfly - Wings of Gold

This Golden winged Dragonfly was inspired by da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.  This art work is an evolving study for a large scale painting that will progress over the next week.

The notes surrounding the dragonfly are written in mirror image similar to how da Vinci represented words. The message in mirror image reads:

The dragonfly spirit means you must consciously make an effort to express your hopes, dreams, needs and wishes.  The dragonfly spirit is the essence of the winds of change, the messages of wisdom and enlightenment, and the communication from the elemental world.  Its medicine beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which need changing.  You can turn to the dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation…

In addition, the line (scale) underneath reads Dreams on the left and Reality on the right representing a fluid existence between these two states.

Two Crabs on the Beach – Dancing

The Crab Tango

Oil on Canvas

This beach painting was inspired from summer days spent on the beaches of the Delaware Coast.  I enhanced the color of the crabs to  make them pop more – their  natural color is light tan.  But, since artists have free reign when it comes to creativity – we are allowed to change colors whenever we choose…..  I hope you enjoy.  Thanks for looking.

Wings of Gold – Dragonfly Mixed Media

Dragonfly - Wings of Gold

WINGS OF GOLD – Oil on Canvas.

This dragonfly was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s, Vitruvian Man. This is one of several drawing/painting studies I did of this composition and soon will transfer it onto a large canvas measuring 6’x4′.  I really enjoyed painting the Golden wings, especially the areas where the light reflects off of the wings and the translucent parts near the body of the dragonfly.

FLOAT  – 6×6  Oil On Board.

There is something very poetic about an empty fisherman’s  boat floating in the water. This was inspired from a series of photos of boats I took last summer.
